American Kestrel

This animal is not on exhibit in the habitats. It is one of our Animal Ambassadors and is used in public and school programs.
History
This bird has a fractured humeral that is partially healed, but it cannot fly. The kestral came to CuriOdyssey in 2007.

Diet in the Wild
Insects, bats, mice, birds, lizards, small snakes, and frogs.
Diet at the Museum
Mice, chick, quail, insects.
Life Span
In the Wild: 1-3 years.
In Captivity: average is 10-15 years, oldest recorded was 19 years.
Habitat
Found along borders of woodlands, open fields, pastures with scattered trees, highways, arid plains and deserts, and wooded canyons.
Range
North America from southern Canada to central Mexico.
Conservation Status:
No special status, although populations in the southeastern US have been in serious decline since mid-1900’s due to habitat loss and destruction, as well as pesticides; listed as threatened in Florida.
